    "Welsh Quilting" with Tia Curtis

Join Tia Curtis as she makes intricate, glorious Welsh Style quilting as easy as pie. Tia Curtis will give you a little history on the most beautiful and passionate of all the quilting styles and break down the designs into simple steps for you to elevate any border into an instant show stopper.  She will also show how to work in some fabulous medallions. You will learn to mark your quilt with minimal lines and incorporate some of the best quilting rulers to quilt the bones of several border styles then fill them in with the best Welsh designs. While the quilting looks complicated it is just a matter of taking the proper steps and knowing a couple tricks. These skills can be used on the long arm or on the domestic machine. If you are a hand quilter, the same techniques will work for you as well.

"Bella Vista Landscapes" with Helene Knott

The vistas in these small quilted projects represent a crosscut of ocean, lake, river, and mountain scenes. Students will work from a pattern of choice in the Bella Vista series to create a small, unique landscape. I call this my instant gratification class, the projects will be fused for speed and efficiency resulting in a project where most students will leave the class with a finished mini-landscape top ready to layer and quilt. This class is an excellent introduction to the principles of creating striking landscape quilts. The small size means students can explore ideas without a huge commitment of time and materials, making these mini landscapes an ideal stepping stone to creating larger scenic quilts with confidence. The focus of the class is on creating a variety of seasonal and atmospheric conditions that make landscape quilts an ever fascinating foray into design variations, and each student’s quilt will be unique.

There are a variety of patterns to choose from.  Each student will receive one pattern of their choice at no additional cost with workshop enrollment.  Additional patterns available for $10 each.  Optional kits available for some of the simpler patterns, $25 each.

    "Amazing Abstracts" with Julia Graves

Create an abstract quilt that has amazing movement and drama. Go from inspiration to a simple sketch, then have fun “coloring” your sketch with bits of fabric to create a mock-up of your design – see before you sew!  The design is gridded and blocks are foundation pieced using an easy sew and flip method with room for creativity and improvisation.  Lots of discussion of design principles and how to use color and value to create the drama and desired effects.  Based on the techniques of Ursula Kern (with her permission of course!). For this one day class, students will start with a base pattern of spiral or a star burst and add their own coloration and value choices.  Most participants will complete several blocks in class.

"Modern Quilting with Your Walking Foot" with Melissa Marginet

Melissa Marginet is a Canadian quilt maker, author, teacher and quilt pattern designer.  She has a passion for teaching, and her focus is to help people gain the confidence to quilt their quilts on their home sewing machines with a walking foot.

In this technique workshop, you will make samples of different quilting designs that can be executed on your home sewing machine with a walking foot.  You will create samples of walking foot designs on small quilt sandwiches to help you understand what makes each design successful.  In the class, you will also look at variations of the designs you stitch out.  The samples you make in class will be a great reference for you when deciding how to quilt your next quilt.

      Skill Level:  All levels.

Supply List:  The supply list is available here.

Book Availability:  Melissa's book, Walking Foot Quilting Designs, is recommended but is not required for the workshop.  We expect to have copies of this book as well her book Edge-to-Edge Walking Foot Quilting Designs available for sale at the Sept., Oct. and Nov. QA meetings to save you the effort and shipping cost of ordering individually.
